Gary Gargan –

Director of Jumbo Squash

US Squash Level 3 Certified Coach

15+ years of private coaching experience in the Boston region (2010-present)

Tufts University Assistant Coach since 2019: Worked with the team and Head Coach Joe Raho to go from from 28th ranked (2018) to 12th ranked (2025) nationally.

Previously coached with Dartmouth in 2018 with their highest ever 5th place in the national rankings.

Extensive junior coaching background: Belmont Hill, Noble and Greenough, Dana Hall

Current Head coach: Acton Boxborough public high school team (3 years)

College placement success: Coached juniors recruited to Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, and NESCAC colleges including Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Connecticut College, Tufts, Middlebury, and Hamilton

Head Coach Tufts Men’s and Women’s Squash

Professional Background & Achievements

  • Head Coach of Tufts University men’s and women’s squash programs since 2017
  • Former assistant coach at Brown University (2014-2017) with both programs in CSA top 20
  • Two-time U.S. Junior Squash champion and former Penn team captain
  • Member of U.S. team at 2004 World Junior Squash Championships

Program Success & Leadership

  • Led both Tufts programs to #12 national rankings in 2024-25 season
  • Designed and launched $6 million Tufts Squash Center with eight courts and advanced technology
  • Established women’s program as consistent national top 20 team
  • Guided men’s team to historic victory over Amherst after 20+ years

  • Maintains exceptional academic standards (men’s team 3.43 GPA, women’s 3.30 GPA)
  • Proven track record in college recruitment and player development

Professional Background

  • Former New Zealand national team player (U19 and senior) and PSA professional tour competitor
  • Over 15 years of international coaching experience with players aged 4-80
  • Assistant coach for Tufts University’s women’s and men’s squash programs

Unique Coaching Approach

  • Specializes in injury prevention using personal experience with knee and achilles injuries
  • Implements a comprehensive 6-part framework: mindfulness, mobility, technique, conditioning, performance review, and recovery
  • Focuses on building solid physical and mental foundations for long-term player development
